Situation

Sapient, a new biotech company working on drug discovery and development, was ready to debut their groundbreaking technology. They needed a modern, responsive website that would serve a key role in driving customer acquisition. Sapient came to our team with bare-bones brand guidelines, giving us the opportunity to rework their visual identity and develop a totally new imagery style to supplement the deliverables we would create.

Process

I worked to define a visual style for the brand that uses abstraction to represent their technology and vision, setting them apart from competitors that rely wholly on technical lab photography. As a starting point, I explored techniques for combining chemical symbolism with naturalistic human imagery. The resulting collage-like style highlights close-up, black and white portraiture that focuses on the texture of skin. These photos then move to reveal a hidden, contrasting layer of brightly-colored macro shots of fluid complexity. Combined with linear details symbolizing the three pillars of Sapient's platform, I introduced a visual metaphor for Sapient’s ability to uncover insights from complex human data. This style would form the basis from which I created a library of decorative graphics, data visualizations, icons, and more for the brand.

Brand System

Sapient's new layered, textural visual language was used to fill out their brand system, allowing me to update their brand guidelines, and design an overview brochure and a pitch deck.

Desktop screens

In collaboration with my team, I designed the desktop and mobile screens for Sapient’s new website, focusing on a polished and elegant user experience. I created prototypes to demonstrate areas of the site that would have motion and interactivity, designed to engage users with depth and storytelling.

Mobile screens

Understanding the importance of responsive design, I made sure that no detail or flourish would be missing from the mobile version of the site.

Explainer video

The client had a lot of to information convey, so we helped them develop an explainer video to be featured on their homepage. I worked with animator John Dorlean, creating detailed storyboards for his reference, and providing guidance and feedback as the video’s art director.

The final product

The animator brought my concepts to life, providing users with an engaging and polished explainer video that communicates the brand's message to a wider audience.
